Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) process is an emerging technique in the field of rapid prototyping industry as almost 100% dense materials can be achieved. Metal deposition often involves multilayer cladding allowing gradient materials and a proper metallurgical junction with the substrate.

LMD process allows very high cooling rates (between 103 and 107°C/sec) leading to phase transformations and ultra fined grained microstructures with enhanced mechanical properties. The case studied will be a tool steel laser deposition on a carbon steel substrate. In the tool steel, the very fine carbides widely distributed within the matrix improve wear properties. However, many problems are still encountered such as porosity, internal residual stresses and cracks, dimensional accuracy, etc.
The research is focused on a thermo mechanical finite element model able to model the process.
The FE code developed within ULg (Lagamine) will be used. Born in the 80s, this code is maintained and developed by two teams: one working in geomechanics (prof. Charlier and F Collin) and the other in metallic material forming processes (Research director FNRS AM Habraken and prof. Duchêne). Using its own code allows its total adaptation to the studied process, all the ingredients required for the process model can be optimized (constitutive law, finite element, adapted mesh evolution…). The research will consist in:
-The development of the model
-Its identification through the experiments performed in Sirris according the campain defined by the code developer
-Its validation through the experiments performed in Sirris according the campain defined by the code developer
-The use of the model to generate sound material deposit as well as constant layer thickness and properties and any requirement of the component users (graded materials…)
Some specific mechanical tests will be included in the experimental part in order to assess the properties of the bonding zone and to set parameters to be used in the simulation approach.
Knowledge on the process is already within the ULg teams: experimental PhD thesis going on since January 2013 on this topic as well another research. Strong links between the thermal material history and the component mechanical properties are demonstrated and analyzed.

Candidate requirements :

-at the start date the candidate must have less than 7 years of experiences (degree got later than 1st July 2007)

-have an interest in numerical Finite Element developments or background in FE methods
-engineering diploma either in Construction, Mechanics, Geology, Aeronautic or physicist/mathematician diploma
-French language knowledge is not mandatory but English one is.

Send by mail a CV defining your numerical skills, your previous experience, the grade obtained at your diploma, referees, a letter defining your motivation for research and an attestation of your diploma.

Contract length: a 1rst contract of 1 year with trial period is proposed and an extension of 2 to 3 years is foreseen (exact total length depending on salary level).
Start: 1st July 2014
